"Master Naturalists gear up for gardens"

"Master Naturalists who are fascinated by plants and wildflowers they see when they work on trails and along streams have two volunteer opportunities to dig into learning more about and taking care of them in two area state parks.

"The Gaston Wildflower Meadow in Bull Shoals-White River State Park displays a variety of plants and wildflowers native to Arkansas, while the Heritage Herb Garden at Ozark Folk Center State Park (OFC) re-creates micro-climates where both native plants and those brought to the Ozarks by European settlers flourish."

NCAMN naturalists have been investing time every week to transform a former gas station lot to the Gaston Wildflower Meadows.  Even those not expert in plants enjoy the experience.  "Satisfaction comes in time spent with friends, in nature, being helpful. It doesn’t get any better than that," says Karen Tietmeyer.

Volunteers also work at the Ozark Folk Center, assisting with native plants while learning about 19th century uses for the plants.
